Who we are

SYSBIO – Centre of Systems Biology – is a Research Centre and a Research Infrastructure (RI), the Italian Candidate Node for ISBE, the ESFRI project for systems biology.

Launched in September 2012, and presently involving the University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB), two Institutes of the Italian National Research Council (IBFM-CNR and IASI-CNR) and the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA), SYSBIO started developing know-how in systems biology areas interesting for the Italian scientific community, integrating the work of more than 80 researchers (half are young scientists we educated and trained), with different background (biologists, computer scientists, chemists, physicists, engineers), and started investing in physical infrastructure for over 1.7 million Euro.

Starting from a fragmented national landscape, SYSBIO developed its own science and innovation profile, marked by high-impact publications.

Launched in September 2012, SYSBIO started developing know-how in systems biology, investing in physical infrastructure for over 1.7 million Euro.

Starting from a fragmented national landscape, SYSBIO developed its own science and innovation profile, marked by high-impact publications:

  • biological big data integration
  • mathematical, multi-level models development
  • metabolic networks analysis

These approaches can be useful to understand complex biological functions (cancer, metabolic syndrome, neurodegeneration, aging), and in accelerating the discovery of new therapies and bioindustrial processes (fermentation processes).

SYSBIO is of great interest both for the scientific community and for the Italian industry. The availability of an RI capable of providing open access to world-class technologies and competences in these areas can be a more competitive tool for the country productive system.
